Weird sentence
[edit]"He also considered being the running mate of Donald Trump for becoming Vice President." Is it just me or does this sentence read funny? I'm not confident enough to fix it myself though. Benevolent Prawn (talk) 07:22, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

citations needed
[edit]can someone fix the page. No offense but there's a lot of very easy to fix problems like needing a citation that Jesse Ventura was the guest referee at the 1st Summerslam.
This is not a difficult claim to source seeing as how this event is literally taped and is being sold right now. You can just source Summerslam 1988. Why would this need a citation???
The person who added [citation needed] probably could have just linked to the Summerslam video instead of adding that to the page for no reason. Like are you having trouble confirming what happened at Summerslam 1988? This is like being unable to find sources for the plot of the movie Terminator. Just cite the movie. 136.24.198.149 (talk) 22:07, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
In the early life part of Jessie, he describes his dad having Slovak heritage, but Janos is Hungarian name, and Hungarians were living in Slovak territory, still a big minority there. Slovak name would be Jan. I would ask for some reference, was his dad actual ethnically Slovak? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.48.43.194 (talk) 14:33, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
Vietnam veteran
[edit]Jesse never was in combat but won the Vietnam service medal. 2600:1015:A005:3806:191C:2FEC:644C:7859 (talk) 20:58, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- This continues to be an interesting topic, especially without access to Ventura's DD214. That said, credible and publicly available information indicates the following:
- Per [1], Ventura's Navy service, locations, and commendations were as follows:
- 1) USN 9/1969 - 9/1973, USNR 9/1973 - 9/1975
- 2) BUD/SEAL AMPHIBIOUS TRAINING, CORONADO, CA and UDT/SEAL TEAM 12, USN AMPHIBIOUS BASE, CORONADO, CA
- 3) VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL and REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM CAMPAIGN MEDAL
- Per [2], "While on active duty, he was a member of Underwater Demolition (SEAL) Team 12."
- The questions are, does that make Jesse a Vietnam War veteran Navy SEAL?
- For the first question, [3] stipulates that, "The term “Vietnam veteran” means an individual who performed active military, naval, or air service in the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam era, without regard to the characterization of that individual’s service."
- In order to qualify for the Vietnam Service Medal, members must have "service in Vietnam and contiguous waters and airspace between 3 July 1965 and 28 March 1973." [4]
- In order to qualify for the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, members must have [5]:
- 1. Served for six months in South Vietnam during the period March 1, 1961 to March 28, 1973.
- 2. Served outside the geographical limits of South Vietnam and contributed direct combat support to the RVN Armed Forces for an aggregate of six months. Only members of the armed forces of the United States who meet the criteria established for the AFEM (Vietnam) or Vietnam Service Medal during the period of service required are considered to have contributed direct combat support to the RVN Armed Forces.
- 3. Were assigned in Vietnam on Jan. 28, 1973, and who served a minimum of 60 calendar days in Vietnam during the period Jan. 29, 1973 to March 28, 1973.
- Thus, to qualify for the two Vietnam medals, Ventura would have had to have performed active naval service in the Republic of Vietnam (with the understanding that Vietnam's "contiguous waters" qualifies). Based on the medals and years in theater, Ventura would qualify as a Vietnam War veteran.
- Now, was Ventura a Navy SEAL? Perhaps a better way to ask this question is, was a considered a SEAL then and should he be considered a SEAL now? This could perhaps be similar to "Are WW2 Army Air Corps members considered Air Force veterans?". [6] would indicate yes.
- The record shows that Ventura completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training circa 1969 and was attached to Underwater Demolition Team 12.
- To answer the first question, context is necessary due to the ever changing world of the military. Two Navy reports from 1961 and 1965 are good data points. [7a] notes that the term SEAL had not yet been conceived, but rather some for of Special Warfare emphasis must emerge, specifically calling out UDT as a requisite. [7b] discusses - at length - UDT/SEAL organizational challenges. Some quotes:
- - "More concrete steps were taken in 1961 when the acronym "SEAL" had emerged in outline form by March 10. By May 3, (Chief of Naval Operations) Burke signed a memorandum to his staff stipulating that, "We should have a record of all Naval personnel...who have been especially trained in guerilla warfare, UDT, psychological warfare, and what the Army calls "Special Forces Training...'
- - "A...naval policy change occurred in...1962 when the Navy recommissioned UDT 22 and commissioned SEAL Teams ONE and TWO...This reversed the process of reducing the Navy's UDT and SEAL combat swimmer commands..."
- - "UDT and SEAL teams are... "part of the foundation upon which the counter-insurgency program is being built."
- - "Although UDTs and the SEAL Teams are similar and many of the problems confronting UDTs also confront the SEAL Teams, this article will deal primarily with the UDTs..."
- - "One course of action which...would put UDT on a professional scale would be to designate it a career specialty...The UDT/SEAL specialty would...ensure that the Navy had senior officers with the UDT/SEAL background to fill the increasing number of DDT/SEAL/Special Operations billets."
- -"In 1962...the...Vice Chief of Naval Operations, proposed a UDT/SEAL career pattern, noting that...'Duty in the SEAL/UDT program will not necessarily preclude an officer from developing...shipboard skills.'"
- - "It would be...more appropriate to have a UDT/SEAL breast insignia...worn in lieu of the Navy-Marine Corps Parachute Insignia...a UDT/SEAL breast insignia would...increase the incentives to serve with UDT "
- Thus, in 1965, it is clear that a UDT and a SEAL Team were considered discrete "units". However, it is also clear that, members assigned to these teams were colloquially lumped together as "UDT/SEALs." This is consistent with the Navy SEAL Museum officially being the "Navy SEAL-UDT Museum." [8] Further, we know that when Ventura completed BUD/S, the Navy SEAL "Special Warfare Insignia" had not yet been established (per [8], it was established in 1970). Instead, per [9], "During the Vietnam War, the Underwater Demolition Badge was issued side by side with the Special Warfare Badge (SEAL Badge). By 1975, the UDT had been declared obsolete and was no longer issued for uniform wear. Service members who had previously held the UDT Badge could apply for the award of the SEAL Badge in lieu of the obsolete decoration." Per [10], "Special Warfare insignia...is considered a "successor badge" to the obsolete Underwater Demolition Badge."
- So, in 1969-1975, was Ventura considered a Navy SEAL? It would appear he was a Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL graduate assigned to an Underwater Demolition Team and part of the overarching UDT/SEAL community. He was likely qualified for the Underwater Demolition Team badge, which may have allowed him to apply for the Navy SEAL Special Warfare Insignia in 1975. Depending on which year it was and the context, Ventura could have been earnestly referred to as a SEAL (especially given that "SEAL" wasn't even a thing until 1962). However, this would likely have been more of a generalization, as there is no evidence that Ventura was attached to a SEAL team.
- What about after he left the service? In this case, the evidence is a bit more emphatic. As noted, the Navy SEAL Museum is officially the "Navy SEAL-UDT Museum" which is "dedicated solely to preserving the history and heritage of the Navy SEALs and their predecessors [including UDTs]."
- Most saliently, eight years after Ventura left the Navy, "by 1983, [UDTs had] all been reorganized into SEAL teams." [11]. If we look a bit ahead to Navy culture in 1996, after the UDTs were converted into SEAL Teams, we see in [10] that, "...BUD/S training [is] the [training] faced by Sailors who hope to wear the naval special warfare insignia someday. It’s the...25-week course that provides the basics of naval special warfare and either makes or breaks all prospective SEALS. (specifically discussing Hell Week within BUD/S).
- Thus, we know that the UDT badge was retired in 1975, allowing UDTs to apply for the SEAL badge. We know that the Navy SEAL museum considers UDT as a predecessor specialty. We know that in 1983 the remaining UDTs were converted to SEAL Teams. We also know that, by the 1990s, BUD/S graduation was synonymous with being a SEAL. Thus, Ventura can call himself a SEAL to the same way that WW2 Army Air Corps veterans are now claimed as the first Air Force veterans.
- In totality, the available information justifies Ventura as a Vietnam War veteran who is eligible to claim membership of the SEAL community.
