Question from AestheticZone 2 (03:17, 10 April 2025)

[edit]

I’ve seen articles have small hyperlinked numbers at the end of the paragraphs, what are those for and how do I use them properly, are they required in all articles? --AestheticZone 2 (talk) 03:17, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@AestheticZone 2: They are reference links down to the references section, indicating what source is supporting the assertion it is attached to. They are absolutely required. Please read WP:REFB to learn how. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:16, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ruina191 (11:59, 11 April 2025)

[edit]

Hi, In one of the "Easy" suggested edits, I came across a page that I thought would be a good place to start (familiarity with the topic) but when I started reading it, the persistent question in my mind was -- why does this page even need to exist on Wikipedia. It did not make sense to me. What can I do in such a case? --Ruina191 (talk) 11:59, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Ruina191: Which article? - UtherSRG (talk) 12:32, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Tourism in India by state 193.206.246.130 (talk) 14:03, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It passes WP:GNG which is our primary inclusion criteria. It certainly needs a lot of work, though. Please always log in when making edits. - UtherSRG (talk) 19:34, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Akinola Omolayo (19:07, 12 April 2025)

[edit]

Hello, How do I create a citation and build my profile? --Akinola Omolayo (talk) 19:07, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Akinola Omolayo: I've put some links on your user talk page to help you get started. You should also read WP:REFB for elarning how to cite sources, and WP:AUTOB to lear that writing about yourself is strongly discouraged. - UtherSRG (talk) 19:47, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects to non-existent Wikispecies pages

[edit]

Today I have found two Wikipedia pages — Brian J. Crother and Philip A. Purser — you have created that are redirects to non-existent pages on Wikispecies. I do not know how it is worthwhile to suggest that "You may want to read the Wikispecies entry on" is helpful when no such page exists there. Also, in both cases a Wikidata entry was created with just a label and enwiki link, i.e. without any statements or identifiers. Oronsay (talk) 20:41, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Oronsay: Thank you for your opinion. However, this concept was tested at AFD and upheld. The community finds them valuable, even if you do not. - UtherSRG (talk) 21:20, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion was held at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 February 14#George Traut Austin. - UtherSRG (talk) 21:22, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That discussion covers a redirect to Wikisource where an entry did exist. The two I quote above have no pages on Wikisource. Redirecting readers to non-existent pages is the same as sending them to deadlinks. Oronsay (talk) 21:28, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah... Well, the first one looks to be a typo... Brian I. Crother. I'll fix that. Likely the other is something similar. Almost always I'm creating these when editing an article that has a hardlink to Wikispecies such as species:Brian J. Crother. If the original hard link hard a typo, then my new soft redirect will have the same typo. I'll trace these back to find the origins... UtherSRG (talk) 21:32, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate you looking into this and improving reader experience. Oronsay (talk) 21:34, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ooooh.... Purser seems to be a junk entry.... a user trying to promote themselves. See Ppurser and their deleted history. So I'll trash that and unlink. Thanks! - UtherSRG (talk) 21:40, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mymousedied (00:17, 13 April 2025)

[edit]

Hi, is it possible to create a new article? I would like to create one for a fairly new family of guns that does not seem to have one yet --Mymousedied (talk) 00:17, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mymousedied: I will put some links on your talk page on how to get started editing here. Once you have some understanding of how to be a Wikipedian, then you should go to WP:MFA to draft your first article. - UtherSRG (talk) 00:55, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Reupark (21:06, 13 April 2025)

[edit]

How should I approach editing more controversial pages? --Reupark (talk) 21:06, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Reupark: Best is to raise issues on the article's talk page and build consensus. - UtherSRG (talk) 21:08, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Would you approach something that is politically controversial differently from something that is scientifically controversial? Reupark (talk) 22:10, 13 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Given how broadly general my advise was, no. - UtherSRG (talk) 00:48, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
